Yesterday I went to the Ace Gallery to check out a show by Robert Wilson called The Voom Portraits. Imagine seeing over sized flat screen monitors mounted on the white gallery walls. On the monitor is a striking, graphically composed portrait of Salma Hayek...but wait! did she just blink? Turns out the models are holding their poses very still while being video taped.

There's one with clouds made of soap foam, and real butterflies that moves around while the actor stands still.

The beautifully lit images catches your attention and you are forces to stand there to see the subtle movements. Most of his subjects are famous actors such as Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, and Jeane Moreau. But there are a few pieces with animals that are very fun to watch. Like a 6 foot high close up of a panting Briard dog.

Robert Wilson is famous for his work with theaters and opera houses. I think that shows in the dramatic lighting on his subjects. And turns out he is also a successful furniture designer.

It was a really great show to check out. If you are interested in seeing it for yourself. The show will be up through May. At the Ace Gallery, Los Angeles.
